Regardless of the business model or industry, we know it takes a comprehensive approach to franchise relations to ensure long term success of your franchise network. It entails getting down to the nitty gritty with robust communication and support programs, and regular inspections. It also entails providing ongoing support in all areas of the business operation as well as open communication and relationship building programs.

Franchisee Performance Monitoring

A proper approach to franchise relations involves more than setting up locations successfully and then simply going into “autopilot” mode. Successful franchising requires consistent performance monitoring of franchisees to ensure their locations are operating successfully and according to your operational standards, specifications and requirements.

FranSource advises you regarding franchise inspections that may be conducted by you at the franchisee’s location. In addition, we prepare a Franchise Inspection Form to be used by your representatives when conducting inspections. The form is used to “rate” the franchisee’s entire business operation, note any deficiencies and the required action plan, and list the amount of time the franchisee has to correct each deficiency. Following the inspection, a report is prepared and sent to the franchisee outlining any deficiencies, the required correction plan for each deficiency, the time period for correcting each deficiency, and the manner by which the franchisee will confirm each deficiency has been corrected. When applicable based on the business operation, franchisors may also elect to conduct inspections via video walkthroughs conducted by franchisees.

In addition, franchisors may elect to implement Secret Shopper programs at their franchisees’ locations. Secret Shops are an extension of your own inspection programs and enable franchisors to have additional touch points at their franchisees’ businesses. This further helps ensure that your franchisees are operating their locations according to your standards, specifications and requirements. Many of our clients elect to implement Secret Shopper programs, and we assist them in determining how may Secret Shops may be conducted annually as well as what will occur upon a negative Secret Shop review. For example, some of our clients will conduct up to four Secret Shops per location per year at their expense. However, if a deficiency is found during a Secret Shop, the franchisee can be made responsible for the costs of additional Secret Shops until the franchisee is in full compliance. This is the level of detail we go into with our clients when developing their Franchise Disclosure Document and Franchise Operations Manual to ensure they fully understand their options as well as best practices in franchising.
